JESUS: THE COVENANT

Numbers 24:9 is a powerful verse within the oracles of Balaam, a non-Israelite prophet hired by King Balak of Moab to curse Israel. Instead of cursing them, Balaam, under divine inspiration, repeatedly blesses Israel.

Here's a breakdown of what Numbers 24:9 means, in context, and how it relates to Jesus Christ:

Numbers 24:9 reads (NIV): "He crouched, he lay down like a lion, and like a lioness; who dares to rouse him? Blessed are those who bless you, and cursed are those who curse you."

Meaning in Context:

  • Divine Protection and Strength: The primary imagery is that of a powerful, secure lion at rest. This symbolizes Israel's strength, authority, and the divine protection God provides. No one dares to disturb a sleeping lion, signifying that God makes His people dwell in safety and that any attempt to harm them would be dangerous and futile.
  • Irreversible Blessing: This verse is the culmination of Balaam's involuntary blessings upon Israel. Despite Balak's intentions, God's will to bless Israel prevails. The phrase "Blessed are those who bless you, and cursed are those who curse you" echoes God's covenant promise to Abraham (Genesis 12:3), reinforcing the idea that God's favor extends to those who favor His chosen people and His judgment falls upon those who oppose them.
  • God's Sovereignty: Balaam's inability to curse Israel, even though he desired to, underscores God's ultimate sovereignty. Human machinations cannot thwart God's plans and promises for His people.

Relationship to Jesus Christ the Messiah (Not Subservience to Israel):

While Numbers 24:9 speaks directly about Israel, Christian theology views this passage, and indeed many Old Testament prophecies, as having a deeper, ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. It's not about being subservient to the nation of Israel in a modern political sense, but about understanding God's overarching redemptive plan, which culminates in Jesus.

Here's how:

  1. The "Lion of Judah" Prophecy: The imagery of the "lion" in Numbers 24:9 is directly connected to the prophecy in Genesis 49:9 about the tribe of Judah: "Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He couches, he lies down as a lion, and as a lioness; who dares to rouse him?" This messianic prophecy points to a strong, kingly figure who would emerge from Judah. Revelation 5:5 explicitly identifies Jesus as "the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David." Therefore, the ultimate "Lion" who is protected and who dispenses blessing and cursing is Jesus Christ.

  2. Ultimate Blessing and Cursing through Christ: The principle "Blessed are those who bless you, and cursed are those who curse you" finds its ultimate fulfillment in relation to Jesus. Those who align themselves with Christ, believe in Him, and follow His teachings receive God's blessings. Conversely, those who reject Him and oppose His kingdom face spiritual judgment. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 10:40, "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me."

  3. God's People Broadened: In the New Covenant, "Israel" takes on a broader meaning. While God's covenant with ethnic Israel remains, through Jesus, believers from all nations are grafted into God's spiritual family (Romans 11). The Church, made up of those who have faith in Jesus, is now considered God's people. Therefore, the protection and blessing promised in Numbers 24:9 extend to all those who are "in Christ."

Conclusion:

Numbers 24:9 is a powerful declaration of God's unwavering protection and blessing upon His chosen people. When interpreted through a Christ-centered lens, it points to Jesus as the ultimate "Lion of Judah" who embodies this divine strength and through whom all blessings flow. It emphasizes God's sovereignty and His commitment to His covenant promises, which find their ultimate fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ, rather than demanding subservience to a particular earthly nation.
